Gearing & Final Drive in Forza Horizon 6

Gearing & Final Drive

Gearing turns raw power into lap time. Set it wrong and you bounce off the limiter or bog out of corners. Set it right and the engine never leaves its best rev range.

Gearing in Forza Horizon 6 sets how the engine's power reaches the road. The final drive shifts all the gears together, while individual ratios shape acceleration versus top speed. A 10-speed race gearbox is meta because more ratios keep the engine in its power band and cut the time lost between shifts. Set the final drive so you hit the rev limiter at the end of the longest straight.

Final drive versus individual gears

The final drive is a master control: raise it and every gear gets shorter for acceleration, lower it and they all get longer for top speed. The individual gear ratios then fine-tune the spacing. Start with the final drive, then space the gears.

Why the 10-speed is meta

A 10-speed race gearbox is one of the best value upgrades in the game. More ratios mean the engine stays closer to peak power at all times, and each shift drops fewer revs, so you lose less time changing gear. It is cheap PI for a real, repeatable gain.

A final drive starting point

Use this as a baseline, then adjust on track: final drive equals 4.25 plus 400 minus your horsepower, divided by 6, times 0.01. For very high power builds the figure is capped so it does not swing wildly. Then tune to the track.

Discipline differences

Not every event wants the same gearing.

Frequently asked questions

Is the 10-speed gearbox worth it in Forza Horizon 6?

Yes. More ratios keep the engine in its power band and cut the dead time between shifts, for very little PI. It is a meta pick on almost every build.

How do I set the final drive?

Start from the baseline formula, then adjust so you hit the rev limiter at the end of the longest straight. Lengthen it on fast tracks, shorten it on tight ones.

Why is my car bouncing off the rev limiter?

Your gearing is too short. Lengthen the final drive or the top gears so the car reaches the end of the straight just as it hits the limiter.

What gearing should I use for drift?

Close-ratio gears so you can hold the redline in third and fourth through a typical slide, with the final drive set to keep you in the power band during transitions.
